Kia has officially launched the all-new Kia Sorento in India at Rs 27.99 lakh (ex-showroom), and that opening price is far more aggressive than expected.
The three-row SUV arrives with diesel and strong-hybrid powertrains, six- and seven-seat layouts, AWD capability and a technology package that puts it squarely into the conversation with the Toyota Fortuner and Tata Safari.
The real shock is how Kia has spread the pricing. The hybrid version starts at just Rs 29.49 lakh, while the range climbs to Rs 40.39 lakh for the flagship six-seat Black Line AWD.
That gives Indian buyers a much wider choice than simply picking between a basic and fully loaded SUV.
Kia Sorento Price Strategy: The Numbers Make Sense
Kia has taken an interesting approach to the seating configurations.
The entry-level seven-seat diesel HTE costs Rs 27.99 lakh, making it the cheapest way into the Sorento. Buyers wanting a six-seat configuration have to step up to the diesel HTK, priced at Rs 32.69 lakh.
The hybrid range is even more interesting.
The seven-seat hybrid HTE starts at Rs 29.49 lakh, just Rs 1.50 lakh more than the entry diesel. For buyers covering high annual kilometres, that relatively small premium could make the hybrid worth serious consideration.
The six-seat hybrid starts at Rs 34.19 lakh.
At the opposite end, the flagship six-seat HTX(A) Black Line AWD hybrid costs Rs 40.39 lakh. The equivalent diesel six-seat Black Line AWD sits at Rs 38.89 lakh.
So, Kia isn’t simply selling one Sorento. It has created a fairly broad price ladder around different seating, drivetrain and equipment combinations.

Diesel DCT Or Strong Hybrid?
This is probably the biggest decision facing Sorento buyers.
The traditional option is Kia’s 2.2-litre diesel engine producing 193 PS and 442 Nm. It is paired with an 8-speed DCT, giving the SUV the kind of strong torque delivery that large three-row SUV buyers typically expect.
AWD is available from the HTX grade, adding another layer of capability for buyers who want the higher-spec drivetrain.
Then there is the more efficiency-focused option.
The Sorento hybrid combines a 1.6-litre T-GDi petrol engine producing 180 PS and 265 Nm with a 65 PS electric motor delivering 264 Nm. The system is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
AWD is available on the HTX-based hybrid variants as well.
On paper, the diesel looks like the enthusiast’s choice. Its 442 Nm of torque and DCT combination should appeal to buyers who regularly travel with a full cabin or want effortless highway performance.
The hybrid, though, is the more interesting proposition for someone who spends a lot of time in city traffic and wants to reduce fuel consumption without moving into a smaller SUV.

Technology Is A Major in Kia Sorento Weapon
Kia has packed the Sorento with technology that goes well beyond the usual large-screen treatment.
The dashboard gets a 12.3-inch HD navigation display, while the SUV also features a dial-type shift-by-wire selector and navigation-based smart cruise control.
There are also relaxation seats, adding a more premium angle to the second-row experience.
But the unusual feature is Kia’s AI Assistant.
The system uses real-time generative AI, with Perplexity providing the intelligence layer and SoundHound AI handling the voice system. That gives the Sorento a genuinely different technology proposition compared with conventional voice-command systems.
For a family SUV that may spend hours on highways, this sort of connected technology could become one of the car’s strongest selling points.
Level 2+ ADAS And 10 Airbags
Kia hasn’t treated safety as an optional luxury either.
The Sorento gets Level 2+ ADAS, supported by 30 autonomous safety features. The standard safety package includes 26 features, while the SUV can be equipped with up to 10 airbags.
That is significant because buyers in this price bracket are increasingly looking beyond engine size and road presence.
The Sorento’s safety and driver-assistance package could become an important differentiator against traditional ladder-frame SUVs.
The Design Is Clearly Meant To Look Expensive
The Sorento follows Kia’s Opposites United design philosophy, with a broad front end, prominent grille and vertically stacked lighting elements.
Its wide stance gives it the visual presence expected from a large premium SUV.
At the back, vertically oriented tail lamps sit above a muscular tailgate and cleaner bumper treatment. The Black Line versions add darker exterior detailing for buyers who want a more aggressive appearance.
The overall design is less about looking rugged in the traditional Fortuner sense and more about appearing modern, sophisticated and substantial.

My Brutal Verdict
I feel Kia has played a masterstroke with the Rs 27.99 lakh starting price.
The reason is simple: the Sorento doesn’t force buyers into one formula. You can get the big diesel, choose six or seven seats, move to a strong hybrid, add AWD and climb into Black Line territory depending on your priorities.
If your priority is strong highway performance, heavy-load driving and punchy torque, I would stick with the 2.2-litre Diesel DCT. That 193 PS/442 Nm combination makes a lot of sense for a large family SUV.
But if your daily driving involves urban traffic, long commutes and high annual running, the Strong Hybrid deserves a serious look. At just Rs 1.50 lakh above the entry diesel, the hybrid’s starting price makes the decision much harder than it initially appears.
In my opinion, that is exactly what Kia wanted.
The Sorento has entered India not as another expensive three-row SUV, but as a car designed to make buyers question whether the conventional Fortuner-style formula is still the only answer.
